Fringed Orchis are a perennial herb that grow in bogs. At the beginning of spring, two long and slender fleshy leaves emerge. There are few roots, but these roots are thick and have small bulbs. At the beginning of summer, a stem grows from the center of the roots to a length of about 30 cm. During the summer, one or two flowers of 2 to 3 cm in size grow at the end of the stem. The flowers are pure white. The shape of the flowers looks like the spread wings of a white egret (“shirasagi”in Japanese). Therefore, these flowers are called “sagisou”in Japanese.
